You can't miss Brunelleschi's magnificent dome atop the rosy marble Cathedral. It's the obvious central meeting point and tourist hub of the city. The streets surrounding the Duomo cater to visitors, with generic, all-day dining for a price and exclusive shopping. Borgo Albizi, which starts behind the Duomo is more of a boutique street, featuring handmade, original designs in clothing and accessories. Sleeping in a hotel near the Duomo makes practical sense, as this is the center of Florence, making it simple to pop back to your hotel room at a moment's notice.
Fortunately, several of our favorite budget hotels in the city are located in this neighborhood—some are surprisingly affordable given their location.
This neighborhood in the southwest quadrant of the city includes areas both inside and outside the city walls. The Duomo and its museums, the Basilica di S. Domingo, and Santo Maria della Scala are all found here. The down and dirty East Village really isn't so down and dirty anymore. It used to be New York City's troubled teen—a hub for bad-boy rock-and-rollers and other rabble-rousers. But things took a turn in the late '80s and '90s as the city cleaned up. Now it's all about NYU students, quirky shops, cheap food, raucous pubs, and sleek little bars. There's still a little edge left to the East Village. Marks Place, for example, has its share of dive bars.
